From a grand opening to Earth Day clean-ups to a sod-turning event, Pomerleau’s Atlantic team has been keeping busy. With more and more players coming on board, the dedication to their local communities never wavers.
New Project
We were awarded the $20-million contract for the refurbishment of the Mulgrave Park Residential Building in Nova Scotia. The project involves re-cladding, re-roofing and replacing fenestration and doors at the Bonaventure Towers. The team will also remove existing windows and install new ones at all elevations, perform concrete repairs on the shear walls and roof, add entrance replacements including canopy, stairs and ramp removal, and replace the main and penthouse roofs on both buildings.
Earth Day Clean-up
To commemorate Earth Day and make a difference, employees participated in community clean-ups in Bedford, New Brunswick, and on the Confederation Trail in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. In Bedford, over 20 employees participated in the clean-up, collecting 100 kg of garbage along the highway. Our employees’ commitment to protecting the environment is the reason we can set and achieve our sustainability goals.
Atlantic Construction Podcast
In late spring, Vivek Tomar, FEC, P. Eng., Director of Strategic Proposals and Pursuits in our Halifax office, participated in a roundtable discussion on the Atlantic Construction Podcast, founded and hosted by Daniel Arsenault. Vivek sat at the table with Ellis Don’s Chief Estimator Travis Randolph and Bird Construction’s Director of Design and Key Accounts Rick Buhr, both also from the Atlantic region.
The episode focused on early contractor involvement, new collaborative contract models and the dispersion of risk through these approaches.
It was an idea Daniel and I discussed when we initially met--to bring three local general contractors together for a podcast. Our great discussion showed how collaborative we are with our competitors, and how we can work together to improve the industry.
Princeton Long-Term Care Facility Sod-Turning
Pomerleau joined the GEM Health Care Group Limited for a sod-turning event in Spryfield, NS, to mark the beginning of construction for the new Princeton Long-Term Care Facility. The new Princeton Heights centre will offer state-of-the-art amenities designed to improve the daily lives of residents, providing them with private bedrooms, washrooms, and access to indoor and outdoor activity spaces.
TFAB Indigenous Business Networking Event
As a lead sponsor and host for the Tools and Financing for Aboriginal Business event hosted by the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB), we had the opportunity to learn from Indigenous business owners. The event focused on supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs through networking.
Earlier this year, we announced our commitment to fulfilling the Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations (PAIR) certification, which is designated by the CCIB. The certification process encourages us to reflect upon and improve our practices, ensuring better representation of Indigenous peoples across our worksites and offices.
Gros Morne Opening
Following a few years of renovations and construction, Parks Canada’s Gros Morne National Park Visitor Centre re-opened in early May. This major project called for the deconstruction and reconstruction of the existing building. In terms of its panoramic views and historical interpretation, the new 1,125-m2 development meets the requirements for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it will also achieve a LEED Silver certification. The centre is seven times larger than the original. Pomerleau also donated and constructed a dog park that will enable visitors’ animal friends to enjoy the new facilities.
Innovation
The Atlantic BIM Team travelled to various sites across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick including the Roger Bacon Long-Term Care Centre, Mt. Alison University’s Harper Hall, the Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre, and Chaleur Hospital to discuss innovation with project teams. Innovation is a key element of our ESG strategy. Sharing knowledge and creating new ideas is how we optimize our teams and our operations.
To top off the tour, and with collaboration in mind, the innovation team also held an event at East Coast (Go) Karting in Moncton, bringing employees from several sites together.
