Ontario's Rewind: A Recap of Early 2024

Brampton Courthouse Addition

As the first three months of 2024 have come to an end, we’re reflecting on the great successes we’ve achieved in Ontario so far. Our offices in Toronto and Ottawa have been bustling with activity, spearheading projects that promise to shape the province's landscape for years to come.

From delivering critical infrastructure projects in healthcare and education, to teaching the next generation of construction leaders, we are reinforcing our commitment to supporting our surrounding communities.

Here's a glimpse into the exciting developments taking place at Pomerleau across Ontario.

Projects, projects, and more projects!

A number of recent project win announcements signifies Pomerleau’s role in helping bolster healthcare infrastructure across the province. Addressing the growing need for long-term care facilities, the Macassa Lodge Long Term Care Home project promises to provide essential support to communities in Hamilton. And further north, Pomerleau was awarded the Early Works contract for the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority Redevelopment project.

Three additional projects, two of which are also in the healthcare sector, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine Epic Facility at the St. George campus, the Health & Wellness Centre in the Koffler Student Services Centre and Hart House Infrastructure Renewal, speak to the strength of our relationship with clients like the University of Toronto.

The Ottawa region has been just as busy.

Improvements to several National Capital Commission (NCC) sites including Kiweki Point, Westboro beach, Mud Lake and the Rideau Canal are underway as the city continues its revitalization efforts.

To meet the needs of Ottawa, we are constructing new infrastructure that supports the evolution of the ever-growing city. The Trillium Line Extension was a critical transportation improvement project that saw eight new stations added, as well as the extension and renovation of five existing stations. New projects like the 40 Elgin Senate Fit-Up and the Parliamentary Precinct Redevelopment, aim to enhance the functionality and aesthetics of the city’s government facilities.

The recently completed Ottawa Community Housing neighbourhood at 715 Mikinak Street, as well as the new development that Pomerleau is building for TCU Development Corp. at 300 Tremblay Rd., are both projects that come during a time when housing is scarce.

Celebrating Milestones

In addition to these exciting announcements, we've also celebrated significant milestones and events that mark progress on ongoing endeavors. Departing from traditional groundbreaking ceremonies, the University of Toronto's Academic Tower project kicked off with a unique "building raising" event, where guests had the opportunity to sign one of the mass timber beams to be used in the building, symbolizing sustainability and innovation in construction processes.

The Brampton Courthouse project celebrated completion by hosting an event with dignitaries from the Ministry of the Attorney General’s office, highlighting our ability to deliver complex projects while ensuring operational continuity. Also wrapping early this year was our work on the new British High Commission building in Ottawa, which replaced the former embassy building.

Growing Together

Our success relies on the wellbeing of our people.

To build the foundations for mental and physical success, the Ottawa office held its first Wellness Day for all regional employees. The one-day inclusive event included activities focused on meditation, nutrition, health and safety and fitness.

As we continue to grow and strengthen our culture, we seek to integrate more talent into our workforce. We recently participated in the Ontario General Contractors Association’s (OGCA) ICI Pathways program. The initiative is designed to introduce a new pool of talent to the industry, including those who have recently immigrated to Canada. Bernard Whelan, a superintendent for Pomerleau’s Toronto region, became heavily involved in the program. Bernard developed curriculum for in-class sessions and co-facilitated training classes. We hired two participants from the program.

Seeing these folks on our projects is a very satisfying experience for me, as I feel I perhaps have had an impact on some people's lives and careers. For me, this experience has been one of the highlights of my career.

With a focus on innovation, collaboration, and community impact, we are proud to play a role in building Ontario's future. As we forge ahead into the remainder of the year, we remain steadfast in our dedication to delivering projects that not only meet the needs of today, but also anticipate the demands of tomorrow.
