Bridge Construction

We were awarded the contract to build the Allumettes Bridge, a vital interprovincial link between Ontario and Quebec that particularly serves the forestry and lumber industry. More than 5,000 vehicles use this bridge each day, including  commercial vehicles that make up 10% of the traffic.

Despite numerous challenges, including strong water currents, a precarious worksite and heavy traffic during construction, we successfully built the bridge to the client's requirements.

The work included the following elements:

  • Demolishing the existing bridge
  • Building a new 280-m steel bridge on two abutments and two pillars (on the river bed)
  • Building 400-m long approaches on both sides

Since the canal was deep along the shoreline, we built a barge bridge in order to build the central pier and erect the steel structure.

Our Challenges

Strong Water Current

We were able to complete the work despite its location in the two-knot water current.

Precarious Site

We erected the 1,800 metric ton steel structure from jetties and demolished the existing bridge from barges.
