Full Reconstruction

The City of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu awarded our team with the mandate to rebuild the Gouin Bridge over the Richelieu River and the Chambly Canal.

For the project, we did the following work:

  • Building a lever bridge to allow the passage of pleasure boats in the Chambly Canal.
  • Rehabilitating the two approaches of the new bridge and the surrounding municipal infrastructure.
  • Performing landscaping on both banks.
  • Carrying out marine caisson pile work and some earthwork under our own forces.
  • Demolishing the existing Gouin bridge.
  • Building the new 425 m bridge (including a traffic lane in each direction, a bicycle path and two concrete sidewalks).

More than 20,000 drivers use this bridge every day. Our new improvements will have a significant impact on tourism and the local economy.

Despite many technical, environmental and traffic challenges, we completed the $70.6 million project in less than two years.

Our Challenges

Managing Vehicle and Boat Traffic

We successfully managed access to the construction site and maintained vehicle and boat traffic, limiting the impact of the work.

Meeting Technical Challenges

We overcame technical challenges involved with the piles of the fixed bridge and the structure of the mobile bridge.

Managing Subcontractors Effectively

Faced with a tight schedule and limited site space, we had to meticulously coordinate a team of subcontractors, a feat we accomplished with flying colours.

Protecting the Environment

We implemented measures to limit the impact of our footprint on the fauna and flora environment of the Richelieu River.

Managing Contaminated Soil

During the work, we uncovered thousands of tons of contaminated soil that we effectively managed according to their degree of contamination.
