Expansion and Upgrading

This mandate involved the construction of a two-storey extension and the renovation and upgrading of many parts of the Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The first floor of the new extension was specifically designed to accommodate two generators and all related equipment, including the following:

  • Transformers.
  • High-voltage switches.
  • Switchboards.
  • All other related equipment.

The second floor of the new extension included an unfinished open space.

The renovation and upgrading of the existing building was divided into six distinct segments, involving a wide range of work:

  • Phase 1 - We converted two patient rooms into new pressurized isolation rooms to protect healthcare workers from contagious patients.
  • Phase 2 - We upgraded a reception area, replacing the desk and adding a glass enclosure.
  • Phase 3 - We upgraded the water entry system to a hybrid filter system.
  • Phase 4 - We converted a room to accommodate a new server.
  • Phase 5 - We removed and replaced sections of the brick and precast concrete cladding with a combination of composite metal panels and new brick. We completed most of this work in sub-zero temperatures. In addition, we replaced numerous windows.
  • Phase 6 - We constructed a number of concrete ramps and installed a new stair lift to bring the building up to current accessibility standards.

Despite the challenges along the way, we completed the project in only one year, meeting all of the client's requirements.

Our Challenges

Comprehensive Coordination

We had to meticulously coordinate the project to complete all the work within an operating healthcare facility, ensuring worker and patient safety in the process.

Winter Work

Despite severe winter weather, we exceeded the client's requirements and completed the project only one year after we were awarded the contract.
