Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre

Pomerleau proudly undertook the construction of the Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre, a vibrant community facility situated in the heart of South Burnaby, British Columbia. Named in honor of Rosemary Brown, a champion of human rights and gender equality, this state-of-the-art centre embodies a commitment to wellness, recreation, and community engagement. 

The arena features two NHL-sized ice rinks, making it a hub for hockey, figure skating, and public skating activities. Our on-site skate shop offers equipment rentals and sales, while versatile multi-purpose rooms provide space for meetings, events, and community gatherings. Visitors can enjoy refreshments from our concession stands and spectate comfortably from warm side viewing areas overlooking the ice. 

Designed with sustainability in mind, the centre incorporates energy-efficient lighting, water-saving fixtures, and abundant north-facing windows to maximize natural light. Our rooftop showcases green initiatives aimed at reducing our environmental impact and fostering a strong connection with the outdoors.

Construction Involves:  

• Construction of a 92,000 square feet facility with two NHL-sized ice rinks. 

• Incorporation of a mixed steel and concrete base complemented by an exposed mass timber roof. 

• Implementation of sustainable strategies such as energy-efficient design and water conservation measures to minimize environmental impact. 

• Collaboration with the City of Burnaby to meet specific community needs and enhance recreational opportunities. 

Protecting the Environment  

The Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre exemplifies a strong commitment to sustainability through innovative design and operational practices. Energy-efficient technologies and water conservation strategies are integrated into the facility to minimize its environmental footprint. Non-Traditional Layout  

Creating a dynamic ice arena within a limited footprint required a unique layout with ice sheets positioned at a right angle, enhancing engagement and street appeal. This involved specialized structural design, including a dynamic mass timber roof atop a mixed steel-and-concrete base, to optimize light and sustainability goals.
