For the second year in a row, we have been selected as one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People. The editors for Canada’s Top Employers recognize companies that offer the nation’s best workplaces and programs for young people just starting their careers.
With nearly 18% of our employees being under 30 years old, it’s important to us that we set this new generation up for success. Pomerleau has introduced many programs for both interns and for recent graduates joining as permanent, full-time employees.
We support the career goals of our employees by providing them with tailored training opportunities. Young employees can map out a direct pathway to managerial positions through our several leadership development programs like Horizons. The program provides a development pathway that builds skills for future director roles, with in-person sessions spread over the course of ten months. PX3, our state-of-the-art training and development centre, is also available to all employees who seek to enhance their expertise and learn a new skill to support their growth.
I admire how forward-thinking Pomerleau is. They were open to my ideas, even as an intern.
Helping interns grow in their career is important to Pomerleau, which is why in addition to being able to access our LinkedIn Learning catalogue, with over 18,000 courses, interns are also able to schedule time with our Training & Leadership Development Specialists across the country for individual development sessions.
Our internship program offers students the chance to gain hands-on experience on worksites and contribute to the industry in an impactful way that will resonate throughout their careers. We ensure that our interns undertake a detailed onboarding program that seamlessly integrates them into the innerworkings of our culture and the industry. Top-performing interns at Pomerleau are recognized at our annual Excellence Gala, where bursaries are given in recognition of outstanding work. We also award several other young professionals with bursaries and scholarships throughout the year.
When I was an intern at Pomerleau, I had the flexibility to finish my courses and come back to a full-time job afterwards. I am now building a fulfilling career for myself here.
We have also partaken in several youth initiatives. In 2022, alongside La Factry, the Montreal School of Creative Sciences, we ran the PAUSE Youth program. This 12-week program aimed to engage the next creative generation in finding novel solutions to contemporary challenges. As part of the Montreal Olympic Stadium roof deconstruction project, we challenged the 17 participants to find concrete options for reusing the raw materials generated by the replacement of the roof. We are looking forward to repeating the experience, with new challenges that will be as relevant to the reality of our projects as they are motivating for the students.
Additionally, in 2022, we also volunteered as a judge in the Atlantic Engineering Competition and see the next generation of engineers demonstrate their talent by developing innovative solutions to problems experienced in the engineering industry.
We seek to approach professional development through innovation and collaboration to create a dynamic and supportive environment for individuals at various stages of their careers. We recognize the pivotal role that interns, and young employees play in our company and in the industry. As we look forward to the future, we are eager to witness the great achievements of the next generation of professionals.
