Canada Place, an iconic landmark built for Expo86 in Vancouver, B.C., stands as a famous harbor backdrop and a significant tourism hub. In 2024, Pomerleau was contracted by Canada Place Corporation to rehabilitate and upgrade the 24K East Promenade deck toppings and waterproofing membranes at the convention centre. The upper-level Promenade, spanning approximately 18,000 ft², serves as the roof of interior space below and as emergency egress routes for the facility. To maintain sufficient egress capacity, the project was carefully executed in three distinct phases, minimizing disruptions and ensuring safety.
The primary objective of the project was to remove and replace the promenade topping and waterproofing membrane. The scope also included the following tasks:
Removal and replacement of existing expansion joints.
Removal and replacement of deck and planter drains.
Replacement of the waterproofing membrane at perimeter planters.
Restoration of perimeter planters, consistent with previous CPC restorations.
Landscaping upgrades.
Plumbing, electrical, and security gate upgrades and remediation.
Due to heavy cruise ship traffic and ongoing facility operations, the project was executed in three distinct phases, carefully planned to maintain evacuation routes and access to event spaces. This phased strategy not only minimized disruption but also ensured that the emergency egress pathway remained clear and accessible throughout the project.
One of the major challenges faced by the Pomerleau team was the continuous flow of visitors and operational requirements at Canada Place. The team meticulously coordinated with the client to minimize disruptions, scheduling work during periods of lower foot traffic and non-peak event times.
Due to the operational nature of Canada Place and the Port of Vancouver, certain blackout periods restricted work. Through proactive planning and close coordination with stakeholders, the Pomerleau team navigated these constraints effectively, maintaining both project quality and cost efficiency.
After the successful delivery of Phases A, B, and C of the East Promenade, Pomerleau was awarded Phase D, focused on revitalizing the northernmost section of the promenade. This final phase of the East Promenade is on track for completion in 2025.
Following a competitive tender process, Pomerleau was also selected to lead the Canada Place 24K West Promenade project. This phase involves similar rehabilitation and upgrades to the upper-level West Promenade, with completion expected in 2026. Together, these projects reflect Pomerleau’s continued commitment to enhancing one of Vancouver’s most iconic waterfront destinations.
We are pleased with both the quality of work and the efficient timeline management of this project. Despite the associated constraints and complexity, our project team’s site stewardship and collaborative approach have been outstanding
Canada Place’s Promenade upgrades showcase Pomerleau’s expertise in managing complex infrastructure projects within dynamic environments. The phased approach, meticulous planning, and effective collaboration ensured minimal disruptions to operations while enhancing the landmark’s functionality and safety.
