Demolition and Reconstruction

The Quebec Ministry of Transportation awarded us the mandate to demolish and rebuild the Alexandre-Martin bridge in Gracefield. The new 232 m, two-lane bridge includes a pier cap, steel structure and concrete deck.

We built the two approaches differently:

  1. The west abutment is set in stone (requiring drilling and blasting)
  2. The east abutment is built on driven piles

For this project, we used soil densification technology (compacted columns) and performed the marine work from barges and tugs only.

We integrated a 3-m diameter pile caisson at a depth of more than 60 m and a 2.5 m diameter pile caisson at a depth of up to 50 m, including a socket set in very hard, sloping stone.

Despite the challenges posed by assembly, soil densification and environmental constraints, we successfully completed the project.

Assembly Over the River

We assembled a complete steel structure over the Gatineau River.

Our Challenges

Extraordinary Parameters

The project was demanding and complex due to its extraordinary parameters, such as soil densification.

Environmental Constraints

We did our best to apply construction techniques that meet high environmental standards, primarily to protect the river throughout the project.
