This summer, twelve Pomerleau staff members volunteered with the TRCA for the Girls Can Too event in Toronto. Girls Can Too is a training program organized by the Toronto Regional Conservation Association. It provides hands-on learning experience in environmental and skilled trades sectors for young girls in grades 7 to 12 at the Heart Lake Conservation Park. The experiential learning program introduces young girls to careers in STEM.
Over a two-week period, the teams helped the girls learn about greenspace and wetland enhancement efforts. The program provided the girls with insight into the best sustainable building practices by having them undertake projects that will give future generations access to a rich and diverse public space. The attendees constructed infrastructure, planted wildflowers, and surveyed the park’s bee population.
I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to volunteer at the Girls Can Too Event. I enjoyed getting to know the girls, sharing my experiences with them and supporting them as they completed the projects throughout the program. I was extremely impressed by the level of initiative, ingenuity, and enthusiasm that the young women demonstrated as they completed the challenging projects that were presented to them. It's amazing to see the benefits that these programs provide to the participants, as well as the long-lasting positive impact on our industry in years to come.
