End-to-End Centre Construction

Eastern Health awarded us the contract to build their molecular imaging centre in St. John's, Newfoundland.

This project was designed to consolidate the client's nuclear medicine services and house the province's first-ever PET/CT scanners and medical cyclotron in one location. This building now plays an instrumental role in improving the treatment and diagnosis of cancer and other illnesses, plus serves as a space for the Cancer Care Program.

Our mandate included the following work:

  • Planning the design and construction activities (including the development of the project schedule).
  • Providing detailed costing.
  • Value engineering.
  • Controlling costs, schedules and quality.
  • Procurement.
  • Supervising the site.
  • Determining the construction methodology and logistics.
  • Supervising and applying the protocol for LEED® certification.
  • Applying environmental protection techniques.
  • Follow-ups.

The building consists of three-floor levels with the following elements:

Level 1 (1,100 m2):

  • General office.
  • Meeting room.
  • Storage spaces.
  • Five hot labs.
  • Decontamination rooms.
  • Waste storage areas.
  • Cyclotron.

Level 2 (2,400 m2):

  • General office.
  • Meeting room.
  • CT scan rooms.
  • Injection rooms.
  • MRI and PET rooms.
  • Recovery rooms.

Level 3 (1,200 m2):

  • Cancer Care Program Centre.
  • Main electrical and mechanical rooms.

Our Challenges

Hospital in Operation During Construction

We carried out the work in such a way as to limit the impact of the construction site traffic on the nearby operating hospital.

Sophisticated Health and Safety Protocol

We implemented a safety protocol to protect, depending on the tasks, the 15 to 20 workers on the site at the same time.
