Laying the Groundwork for the Project

Our team was awarded the project to excavate and build the concrete foundations for the Core Science facility in Saint John's, Newfoundland.

The work included the following elements:

  • Excavating and backfilling a surface of 8,700 m2 (representing a volume of 25,000 m3 and requiring 5,000 m3 of concrete).
  • Adding footings for walls and columns.
  • Adding floor beams.
  • Installing foundations to support vibration-sensitive equipment.

The project took place in the busy campus environment, requiring us to communicate effectively with the university to ensure that the work and deliveries did not affect the everyday operations surrounding the site.

We closely monitored health and safety aspects, implementing site-specific plans to protect workers and the public.

Our Challenge

Challenging Working Conditions

We successfully completed the work despite a large volume of incoming water and granular, muddy soil.
