Pomerleau Once Again Recognized as One of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People

Pomerleau Once Again Recognized as One of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People

We are very proud to announce that Pomerleau has once again been named one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People for 2026. This national recognition celebrates organizations that offer an exceptional professional experience to individuals at the beginning of their careers. Since 2002, the program has highlighted employers that stand out through concrete initiatives, structured support, and a work environment where young talent can learn, contribute, and thrive.

This distinction reaffirms our commitment to supporting the next generation, providing real opportunities for growth, and building the future of our industry together.

A Strategic Challenge in the Context of a Labour Shortage

At a time when the construction industry is facing a significant labour shortage and fewer young people are choosing careers in this sector, it is essential for us to stand out as an employer of choice. In a study we commissioned from Léger, which examined public perceptions of the industry, several key findings emerged:

  • 90% of Canadians believe that construction is essential to economic development.
  • Yet only 56% would recommend a career in construction to their children or loved ones.
  • And just 55% consider the sector to be “attractive for young people.”

These figures paint a clear picture of our industry: the need is immense, but its appeal to the next generation remains limited. This presents a major challenge. As the workforce shrinks and retirements accelerate, we must attract, inspire, and retain young talent by offering an environment where they feel valued, supported, and empowered to contribute to meaningful projects. Being recognized as a Top Employer for Young People therefore represents more than an honour: it is a strategic responsibility that allows us to strengthen the future of our industry, remain competitive, and ensure that the communities we build today continue to thrive tomorrow.

Being an Employer of Choice for Young People: What It Means to Us

Being an employer of choice for young people means making concrete commitments that we strive to uphold every day:

  • Creating programs that allow young professionals to enter the industry with confidence—supported, heard, and valued.
  • Offering clear career paths from the moment of hiring, rather than just a temporary job.
  • Fostering a culture of continuous development through training, mentorship, and growth opportunities.
  • Rethinking the image of the industry itself. Our Léger survey revealed that 74% of respondents believe physical strength is required to work in construction—a stereotype we must actively challenge, especially given the wide range of stimulating and structured professional roles available.
  • Welcoming diversity and youth as strengths that bring fresh ideas, new perspectives, and positive energy.

Our Recognition: A Tangible Sign of Our Commitment

Being recognized once again as a Top Employer for Young People confirms that our efforts are making a real difference. It shows that our approach goes beyond words and is reflected in everyday experience. We offer an environment where the next generation can learn, contribute, and grow, while playing an active role in an industry undergoing meaningful transformation.

A Young Employee’s Perspective That Reflects Pomerleau’s Culture

To better understand the experience of young professionals at Pomerleau, we spoke with KaTsi Yeung, Assistant Project Manager, about what truly makes a difference when starting a career in construction.

From the very beginning, KaTsi felt she had a place and a voice. “When I started at Pomerleau, I immediately felt that my ideas mattered,” she explains. “Even as a new team member, I was encouraged to contribute, to learn, and to grow. That trust, given so early on, is what motivated me and made me see a future here.” She is particularly proud to have contributed to projects with a strong community impact, such as the Primary Urgent Care Centre for Vancouver Coastal Health and several projects at Canada Place. “What we build has an immediate and lasting purpose. It’s motivating to know that it improves the lives of so many people.”

For her, opportunities for growth and leadership are essential. She hopes to take part in Vision, a program designed for new managers who want to deepen their team management skills. She also highlights a memorable experience: her participation in the Women in Construction panel. “Sharing our experiences and reflecting together on the future of women in the industry was incredibly powerful.” She adds, “Pomerleau’s values, Love, Adaptability, Innovation, Excellence, and Authenticity, are not just words. They are lived every day and help us find our voice from the very start.”

Our Commitment to Strengthening the Future of the Industry with Young People

In an industry that is rapidly evolving and facing growing needs, the next generation represents far more than an advantage: it is the key to our collective future. To encourage young people to choose construction, stay in the field, and make their mark, we must offer an environment where they feel empowered to grow, fulfill their potential, and contribute to something greater than themselves. That is why we focus on training, innovation, inclusion, leadership, and collaboration, creating a space where every young talent can not only learn, but also influence, transform, and move our industry forward.

We are proud to once again receive this recognition as one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People, as it confirms that our commitment is real, lasting, and meaningful.

We thank everyone who has joined us on this journey, this recognition is yours as well. Together, we can redefine construction, and your talent will help shape our story. To young graduates, interns, and early-career professionals: if you are looking for a place to learn, innovate, and make an impact, where you can help build the communities of tomorrow, we are ready to welcome you.
