Pomerleau Celebrates 60 Years

Since opening its first Atlantic Canadian office in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2003, Pomerleau's presence across the region has continued to grow alongside the communities it serves.
What began with a single office has evolved into a regional team of more than 170 employees working across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Over the past two decades, Pomerleau has delivered infrastructure, healthcare, education, and community projects that support the daily lives of Atlantic Canadians while contributing to the long-term development of the region.
As Pomerleau celebrates 60 years of building across Canada, we look back at some of the milestones and projects that have helped shape our story in Atlantic Canada.
Establishing Our Presence in Atlantic Canada: Halifax Harbour Solutions – 2004
Pomerleau's first Atlantic office was in Halifax in 2003, and we quickly became involved in one of the region's most significant environmental infrastructure initiatives: Halifax Harbour Solutions
Delivered for Halifax Regional Municipality, the design-build project transformed wastewater treatment throughout the region through the design and construction of three advanced treatment facilities servicing approximately 250,000 residents.
The project significantly improved water quality within the Halifax Harbour and helped reduce untreated wastewater discharge into one of Atlantic Canada's most important coastal ecosystems. Beyond its environmental impact, Halifax Harbour Solutions demonstrated Pomerleau's ability to deliver complex infrastructure projects and marked an important step in establishing the company's long-term presence in the region.
Creating Modern Learning Environments: Citadel High School – 2007
As Atlantic Canada's communities continued to grow, so did the need for modern educational facilities.
In Halifax, Pomerleau contributed to the construction of Citadel High School, a landmark educational project designed to serve students and the broader community. Featuring classrooms, science laboratories, athletic facilities, an auditorium and community spaces, the school provides a dynamic environment for learning and recreation.
The LEED-certified facility incorporates sustainable features including a green roof, rainwater harvesting systems and energy-efficient building technologies, reflecting a growing focus on environmental responsibility in public infrastructure projects.
Nearly two decades later, Citadel High School continues to play an important role in the daily lives of students, teachers and families throughout downtown Halifax and surrounding communities.
Supporting Healthcare Infrastructure: Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont Hospital Energy Centre – 2013
2013 marked another important milestone for Pomerleau in Atlantic Canada with the opening of an office in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, strengthening the company's presence across the region.
That same year also saw the completion of the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont Hospital Energy Centre in Moncton, New Brunswick.
Built while maintaining critical hospital operations, the project included the construction of a new energy centre and extensive underground service infrastructure connecting the facility to the existing hospital campus. The project enhanced the reliability and resiliency of essential healthcare services for one of New Brunswick's leading healthcare institutions.
By delivering complex work in an active healthcare environment, Pomerleau helped support healthcare services relied upon by communities throughout southeastern New Brunswick.
Strengthening Economic Development: St. John's Convention Centre Expansion – 2016
As Newfoundland and Labrador's capital continued to grow as a destination for tourism, business and major events, the St. John's Convention Centre underwent a significant transformation. Construction started on the St. John’s Convention Centre in 2013 and was completed in 2016. This project represented a major milestone in continuing to expand Pomerleau’s growth in Atlantic Canada, helping to cement and deliver projects in Newfoundland that strengthens communities and supports regional growth.
Completed in downtown St. John's, the expansion modernized and enlarged the province's premier convention and event facility, creating new opportunities for conferences, community gatherings and economic activity.
The project added new meeting spaces, expanded event capacity and improved connections with surrounding hospitality infrastructure, helping reinforce downtown St. John's as an important economic and cultural hub for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Investing in Essential Infrastructure: Souris Wastewater Treatment Facility – 2022
By 2022, Pomerleau's growth in Atlantic Canada reached another milestone with the opening of an office in Moncton, New Brunswick. This new office continued to strengthen Pomerleau’s presence in New Brunswick, following continued project success,
That same year, the company completed major upgrades to the Souris Wastewater Treatment Facility in Prince Edward Island, improving critical municipal infrastructure while maintaining continuous wastewater treatment operations throughout construction.
The project enhanced environmental performance, increased operational efficiency and ensured the town's infrastructure could continue supporting residents for years to come.
Like Halifax Harbour Solutions before it, the project reflects Pomerleau's ongoing commitment to infrastructure that improves quality of life and protects Atlantic Canada's natural environment.
Building the Future of Atlantic Canada: Our current projects in Atlantic Canada
Wije'winen Centre
Today, Pomerleau continues to contribute to projects that will help shape the future of Atlantic Canada. One of the most significant is the Wije'winen Centre in Halifax, the future home of the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Society.
Designed as a cultural gateway and community hub, the Indigenous-led facility will deliver nearly 70 programs and services while providing space for healthcare, education, cultural activities and community gatherings.
Built to a zero-carbon standard and incorporating mass timber construction, the project reflects a shared commitment to sustainability, reconciliation, and community-building.
Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre
In Moncton, the Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre (ASEC) is helping position Atlantic Canada as a hub for scientific research and innovation.
This major federal project will bring together advanced technologies, sustainable building systems and strong Indigenous participation to create a state-of-the-art scientific facility serving researchers and government agencies for decades to come.
Targeting LEED Gold certification, ASEC demonstrates how innovation and sustainability continue to shape the future of construction in Atlantic Canada.
Cape Breton Regional Hospital Expansion
Another defining chapter in Pomerleau's Atlantic story is currently taking shape in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Expansion is the largest project Pomerleau has undertaken in Atlantic Canada to date. In partnership with Lindsay Construction, the development includes a new cancer centre, clinical services building and energy centre, in addition to renovations of the existing hospital campus.
Once complete, the project will expand access to healthcare services, support advanced cancer treatment and improve clinical care for communities throughout Cape Breton and beyond.
Growing Alongside Atlantic Communities
In parallel with its project work, Pomerleau has continued to invest in the communities where its employees live and work.
From supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada and the Bedford Parade of Lights to partnering with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick and contributing to the Great Big Dig in support of the IWK Health Centre, community involvement remains a central part of Pomerleau's presence in Atlantic Canada.
More Than 20 Years of Growth in Atlantic Canada
From opening a Halifax office in 2003 to delivering some of the region's most significant infrastructure, healthcare, education and community projects, Pomerleau's growth in Atlantic Canada has always been closely connected to the needs of local communities.
