Pomerleau has been named General Contractor for the expansion of Stevenson Memorial Hospital Phase 1 Redevelopment Project in New Tecumseth, Ontario, as part of a renewed effort to expand critical healthcare infrastructure that will help local communities, including parts of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), access high-quality care where they live and when they need it.

This project marks another important milestone in Pomerleau’s continued growth in the Ontario healthcare construction market, reinforcing its ability to deliver complex, high-quality healthcare infrastructure that supports communities where they live and when they need care.

Regional legacy of the Stevenson Memorial Hospital

The Stevenson Memorial Hospital first opened on June 30, 1928, through community support and philanthropy, and has since become a trusted community hospital serving New Tecumseth and surrounding areas. The current facility, built in 1964, was originally designed for far fewer patients than it now sees annually.

Today, with rapid population growth around south Simcoe County and expanding residential development from the GTA’s northern edges, this redevelopment is poised to ensure residents continue to receive modern, accessible, high-quality healthcare without travelling long distances.

Expanding clinical capacity while maintaining operations

The project includes the construction of a wrap-around design that will be approximately 147,100 square feet, located adjacent to the existing hospital. The new facility will house key clinical areas, including:

Emergency Department

The emergency department will triple in size, featuring a separate public entrance and enclosed ambulance bays designed to improve patient flow, safety and emergency response efficiency.

Laboratory services

The expansion includes enhanced laboratory space to support diagnostic services and meet the needs of a growing patient population in New Tecumseth and surrounding communities.

Surgical suite

The new facility will include two state-of-the-art surgical suites, along with an OR‑compatible endoscopy room that can function as an operating room when needed, increasing surgical flexibility and supporting the timely delivery of essential procedures.

Obstetrics (Birthing Unit)

Located on the third floor of the new expansion, the obstetrics unit will feature bright, modern patient rooms designed with family-friendly spaces to enhance comfort and care experiences.

The scope of work also involves significant site regrading,  and the implementation of new traffic flow and utility connections, all while the hospital continues to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This redevelopment will help the hospital meet present demands and accommodate future growth linked to nearby GTA communities where populations are rapidly increasing.

A collaborative healthcare infrastructure project

“The expansion of the Stevenson Memorial Hospital is critical component to addressing the healthcare needs of Ontarians,” says Sean Smithson, Pomerleau’s Regional Vice President. “We are proud to partner with Infrastructure Ontario and the team at the Stevenson Memorial Hospital to deliver a safe, modern facility that will help the community access the critical care they need when they need it.”

Through close collaboration with public-sector partners, Pomerleau is supporting the delivery of healthcare environments designed to enhance patient care, safety, and operational efficiency.

Strengthening Pomerleau’s presence in the healthcare construction sector in Ontario

This project further demonstrates Pomerleau’s growing presence in Ontario and its ability to deliver high-quality healthcare infrastructure projects. Backed by experienced teams and a collaborative delivery approach, Pomerleau continues to contribute to the modernization of hospitals and healthcare facilities across the province.

By helping deliver critical infrastructure that supports access to care close to home, Pomerleau is playing an active role in strengthening Ontario’s healthcare system for generations to come.
